Environmental-Economic Accounting for Water
Brazil
Since water is a key element of economic development, Brazil's Ministry of the Environment developed the Environmental-Economic Accounting for Water. The goal is to support sectoral planning and guide economic and water resource management. This framework integrates physical and financial indicators to help shape action plans and public policies for water management.

Project Outputs
The results of Brazil's first environmental-economic accounts for water were published in 2018, covering statistical data from 2013 to 2015. These accounts included water assets, supply and use tables, and other key environmental-economic indicators.
-The project successfully provided strategic data to support sectoral planning and guide economic and water resource management. This was achieved by analyzing how water resources are used across different economic sectors. Key areas analyzed include:
-How pressures from economic activities affect water assets and reserves
-The connections between water resources, economic activities, and the environment
-Costs related to economic activities that use water for production
-Revenue generated from water use
-Investment and maintenance costs for infrastructure related to water abstraction, treatment, and supply
-Costs borne by users of water supply and sewerage services
-Water availability, human water consumption, as well as water efficiency and water productivity.
