“ทุนธรรมชาติ” คือ ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ให้ประโยชน์แก่มนุษย์ทั้งทางตรงและทางอ้อม ประกอบด้วยทรัพยากรป่าไม้ ทรัพยากรน้ำ สิ่งมีชีวิต ที่ดิน พลังงาน แร่ธาตุ ตลอดจนระบบนิเวศรวมถึงการบริการของระบบนิเวศ เช่น อากาศ น้ำ เนื้อไม้ ที่อยู่อาศัยและอาหาร
ดังนั้น จึงมีความจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่ต้องมีความรู้ความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับทุนทางธรรมชาติเพื่อนำไปสู่การใช้ประโยชน์ทรัพยากรและบริการจากระบบนิเวศอย่างยั่งยืน ตลอดจนการบูรณาการสู่การกำหนดนโยบายเพื่อจัดการทรัพยากรอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ
