Natural Capital Accounts for Public Green Space
London, United Kingdom
Londoners live in one of the greenest cities in the world and have access to a large network of parks and green spaces. However, due to limited public funding, many areas struggle to invest in and maintain these public spaces. This led to the creation of natural capital accounts to evaluate the economic value that London’s parks provide. The goal is to understand where this economic value comes from and measure social benefits in monetary terms. This will help decision-makers manage and invest in parks in a way that best benefits local people and the economy.

Project Outputs
Natural capital accounting for London's public green spaces is a framework used to measure economic value based on environmental assets that benefit humans. It measures the physical amount, quality, and flow of environmental services provided by London's parks and green spaces. These areas create massive economic value and benefits, such as improving physical and mental health, storing carbon, and lowering urban temperatures.
The total economic value and benefits from London’s parks and green spaces are worth over £91 billion. This means Londoners get £27 in value for every £1 spent on maintaining these green spaces. This information can be used to guide decisions about funding for park maintenance. Since local councils currently pay for this maintenance, this study suggests that decision-makers could use money from public health budgets to help sustain and protect public green spaces.
